Museums and other cultural institutions are important sources of scholarship, research, and the organization and exhibition of historical and cultural artifacts. Largely unfettered by the technology constraints of educational institutions, museums can offer direct access to expertise, primary sources of information, and a culture of the interest-driven pursuit of knowledge. Digital media brings museum collections alive for a new generation of visitors. Mobile devices enable young people to roam the galleries and exhibition halls and curate exhibits of their own using the video capabilities of smart phones. Students can design text message-based scavenger hunts and use GPS and augmented reality applications to bring new life to the museum-going experience. The New Learning Institute welcomes the participation of museums and cultural institutions in its digital media programming.
